An Innovative Broker with Old-World Sensibility

In 1991 Harley E. Rouda Sr., CRB, GRI, was the president of the National Association of REALTORS® as well as president of the Asian-Pacific/APREF Council Committee (International Real Estate). The annual APREF meeting, hosting real estate professionals from around the world, took place that year in Honolulu, Hawaii. A large number of the attendees were REALTORS® from Japan and Korea. Those who didn't speak English wore translation headphones, yet Rouda worked diligently to memorize a brief greeting message in both languages. He botched one word that brought laughter from the audience, but then he received a standing ovation.

"Afterward they came up by the dozens, shaking my hand for trying to speak their language," Rouda says. "It was one of the greatest days in my life."
